The abrasive grains, oriented by means of an electric field so as to expose their sharpest edges, are attached to a backing (cloth or paper) by means of a first layer of resin, and then held in place by a second, more substantial layer of resin. In some cases, cooling and lubricating additives are present on top of the second layer of resin or mixed with the resin itself in order to improve the performance of the abrasive, especially in extremely high-performance products such as ceramic abrasives.
